Emergency Preparedness in Los Cabos: A Guide for Foreign Residents
Living in Los Cabos means enjoying an extraordinary destination, but it also means being prepared for the natural conditions that are part of our region. Hurricanes and earthquakes can occur in Baja California Sur, and knowing what to do before, during, and after an emergency can make an important difference for you, your family, and your community.
With this in mind, the H. XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos, through the Municipal Tourism Direction and the Municipal Coordination of Attention to Foreign Residents, alongside the Foreign Residents Advisory Committee (FRAC), has prepared the Emergency Contingency Plan for Foreign Residents in the Municipality of Los Cabos.
This official guide provides practical information to help foreign residents prepare for natural disasters and respond appropriately in the event of an emergency.
Be Prepared for Up to 15 Days
A major natural disaster may temporarily affect roads, electricity, potable water, communications, and other essential services. For this reason, residents are encouraged to maintain enough emergency supplies to remain self-sufficient for up to 15 days.
The plan includes a detailed survival checklist covering potable water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, essential medications, flashlights, batteries, radios, portable or solar chargers, hygiene products, clothing, tools, important documents, vehicle fuel, and supplies for pets.
Reliable information is essential during an emergency. The guide identifies official federal, state, and municipal Civil Protection channels that residents can follow for weather information, emergency notices, and instructions.
Foreign residents are also encouraged to enable notifications on their mobile devices, register with their respective consulates when applicable, use emergency notification applications, and keep communication channels available with family members and friends.
Know Your Rally Points and Temporary Shelters
Preparation also means knowing where to go if an evacuation or emergency response becomes necessary.
The Emergency Contingency Plan identifies suggested community rally points in Cabo San Lucas and provides a list of temporary shelters designated by Los Cabos Civil Protection throughout San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Miraflores, Santiago, La Ribera, and surrounding communities.
Residents are encouraged to become familiar with the shelter nearest to their home before an emergency occurs. Shelter activation will depend on the nature and severity of each event and will be communicated by Civil Protection through official channels.
Preparation Is a Shared Responsibility
Emergency preparedness begins before an emergency occurs. Maintaining updated supplies, knowing your evacuation options, following official information, and having a family communication plan are simple actions that can significantly improve your ability to respond.
